History of the Civil Appellate High Court

Strengthening the efficiency of the civil justice system in Sri Lanka.

Establishment of the Court

The establishment of the Civil Appellate High Court of Vavuniya on September 29, 2011, was a major milestone in decentralizing Sri Lanka's judicial system and bringing the administration of justice closer to the public. The creation of this court served as a historic turning point, addressing the long-standing legal difficulties faced by the people of the Northern Province for decades.

Prior to this system enacted under the High Court of the Provinces (Special Provisions) (Amendment) Act No. 54 of 2006, litigants had to submit their petitions directly to the Court of Appeal located in Colombo, enduring high travel expenses, protracted delays, and transportation hardships. Following 2009, an urgent need arose to rebuild civil administration and infrastructure, leading to the official inauguration of the Court in Vavuniya.
